Surgical Procedures
Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery
Robert Hone And Ali Al-lami are both members of the British Association of Endocrine & Thyroid Surgeons and participate in the UK registry of Endocrine & Thyroid Surgeons National Database. Both are members of the East Kent thyroid multidisciplinary team meeting, managing complex cases from across Kent. They have a weekly thyroid and parathyroid clinic and regularly see patients with thyroid cancer, thyroid enlargement (goitre), cysts, lumps and chronically high thyroid hormone levels (for example Graves’ Disease) and parathyroid problems.
Parotid and Salivary gland Surgery
Mr Hone and Mr Al-lami have a weekly head and neck clinic and are members of the East Kent head and neck multidisciplinary team meeting for complex cases and cancer. They see and treat patients with parotid and salivary gland conditions including salivary gland cancer, gland enlargement, inflammation, infections, dry mouth and throat, increased saliva and salivary gland stones.
Transoral throat and voice Surgery
Robert Hone and Ali Al-lami manage cancerous and non-cancerous conditions of the throat and voice box (larynx) in their clinics. They both perform advanced surgery through the mouth and complex airway surgery. Mr Hone was instrumental in the purchase of a new laser for surgery on the throat and voice box and is part of a team introducing head and neck robotic surgery to Kent. Conditions Mr Hone and Mr Al-lami see and treat include voice hoarseness, tonsillitis, globus pharyngeus, indigestion/reflux, chronic cough, post nasal drip, sensation of something in the throat, throat tightness, sore throat, sleep apnoea and cancer of the throat and voice box.
Tonsillectomy, Adenoidectomy and Grommets
Tonsillitis and sleep apnoea is a common condition in adults and children. Robert Hone and Ali Al-lami perform both traditional extracapsular and new coblation intracapsular tonsillectomy. Adenoidectomy is performed with suction diathermy for conditions such as snoring, sleep apnoea and blocked nose but it can be done to help with glue ear, hearing problems and ear infections. They routinely inspect the adenoids during a Tonsillectomy or Grommet insertion. A Grommet is a small plastic tube inserted through the ear drum and is indicated for hearing loss with fluid behind the ear drum or ear infections.
Nasal and Sinus Surgery
Sinus surgery may be necessary for rhinosinutis, polyps, tumours, nasal blockage/discharge, recurrent sinusitis and occasionally, severe nose bleeds. It is performed using cameras up the nostrils to open the sinuses, help symptoms, medication distribution and clear the airways. The extent and type of sinus surgery depends on the severity and the type of condition being treated. Septal surgery is usually performed for a bend in the septum blocking the nose. This is usually following a nasal injury. Other nasal procedures include cautery for nose bleeds, buttons for holes (perforations) and cosmetic surgery.
